Emma Rankin, namesake of our Chapter, exemplified the character of the Southern Lady during the troubled times of The War Between The States. A "School Marm" by profession, she was summoned by Capt. John Carson to teach the children of the Pleasant Gardens Plantation and the surround area. She taught all children, black and white, to read and write. The daughter of a Presbyterian Minister from Caldwell County NC she devoted her life to "her kid’s". Yet when she was forced into it she displayed great courage in the face of the Stonemans’ Raiders that threatened The Historic Carson House where she lived. She led a group of women, both free and slaves, in efforts to put fires out that the Raiders had set. Their success left us with a beautiful Southern Plantation Home as a reminder of a time long past. To her we pay our respects by honoring her with the name of Emma Rankin Chapter 32.

Chartered in 2004, the Chapter assist the McDowell Men in their many activities and are dedicated to preserving the history and heritage the our Confederate ancestors fought and died for.
